Sebrina L. Slack,

Who she is ...

Sebrina L. Slack is seeking election as Circuit Judge in Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, which includes Volusia, Flagler, Putnam, and St. John's counties. Sebrina is currently the managing attorney and shareholder with the law firm of Landis Graham French, PA, in DeLand, where she handles a variety of matters including, civil litigation, family law, business law, condominium association law, and probate litigation.  In addition to being an experienced attorney, Sebrina is dedicated to her family and an active member of the community.

Sebrina was born in Daytona Beach and grew up in Holly Hill.  Like her parents, grandparents, sister, brother, husband, and many other relatives, she attended and graduated from Mainland High School.  By earning an academic scholarship, Sebrina was able to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History and a double minor in English and Politics.  While at the University of Miami, Sebrina was a member of the President’s 100, the “Band of the Hour” Marching Band, Tau Beta Sigma Sorority, and several championship intramural sports teams.

After college, Sebrina spent several years working as an assistant librarian while saving for her dream of attending law school.  In 2000, she earned her law degree from at the highly ranked George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia.  While at George Mason, Sebrina completed a specialized course of study and earned a certificate in Corporate and Securities Law. In addition, she  was a member of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team.  While attending law school, Sebrina worked as a student assistant in the law library, as a student representative for Bar Bri (a bar preparation course), and as a law clerk for the General District Court in and for Arlington County, Virginia.

In 2000, Sebrina returned home of Daytona Beach, Florida and began her legal career as a prosecutor in the Office of the State Attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit in Volusia County. Initially, Sebrina handled juvenile prosecutions in Daytona Beach.  After less than a year, Sebrina was promoted to the misdemeanor division in New Smyrna Beach, where she was the sole prosecutor for misdemeanors in Southeast Volusia.  After less than a year, Sebrina was again promoted to the Felony Sex Crimes Division in Daytona Beach, where she was responsible for prosecuting criminals charged with felony sex offenses.  The most rewarding aspect of time as a prosecutor was the opportunity for her to advocate for the victims and assist them in the pursuit for justice.  Sebrina gained extensive courtroom experience taking eighty-nine (89) criminal cases to trial during her service as a prosecutor.

In 2003, Sebrina began working for the Florida Department of Revenue in the Sales Tax Division in Tallahassee, Florida, in order to apply the specialized knowledge in corporations and taxation she obtained during law school. During her nearly two years with the Department, Sebrina prepared technical assistance advisements which are published position statements, handled taxpayer appeals of sales tax audits, and participated on a rule revision committee.  Although this work was interesting and demanding, Sebrina missed the challenge of the courtroom and her friends and family in Central Florida.

In late 2004, Sebrina returned home and began working as an associate attorney at the law firm of Smith, Hood, Perkins, Loucks, Stout, Bigman, Lane and Brock, PA, in Daytona Beach, where she practiced in the areas of civil litigation and family law.  She handled a wide variety of matters, including civil litigation, business litigation, plaintiff’s insurance cases, construction defect litigation, and divorces.

In 2008, Sebrina seized the opportunity to join Landis Graham French, PA, one the oldest law firms in continuous existence in the State of Florida, in the firm’s DeLand office.  Sebrina is currently the managing attorney and practices in the areas of civil litigation and family law.  She handles a wide variety of matters including, general civil litigation, family law, employment disputes, education law, condominium association matters, and various transactional matters.

As an attorney in private practice, Sebrina believes it is important to contribute to her community by performing volunteer legal work.  As a volunteer guardian ad litem in family law cases, Sebrina advocates for the children who are involved in contested custody disputes between their parents.  Additionally, Sebrina frequently volunteers her time without charge or at a reduced fees in family law matters for clients who are unable to afford the cost of her services. Sebrina has found the greatest need for her volunteer services in family law matters where families are often struggling to recover from the financial and emotional devastation of divorce.

Sebrina is also active as member of the legal community and actively promotes professionalism amongst attorneys.  Sebrina currently serves on the Florida Bar Grievance Committee for Volusia County.  Sebrina is a long time member of the Volusia County Bar Association, for which she previously served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President.  Sebrina is also currently a member of the Volusia Flagler Association for Women Lawyers and the Florida Association for Women Lawyers.  Recently, she became a member of the Dunn Blount Inn of Court, a group of lawyers dedicated to maintaining the highest level of professionalism in the practice of law.  In addition, Sebrina served on the Volusia County Human Services Advisory Board for several years. In these and many other ways, Sebrina has served her community through her profession as an attorney.

Sebrina is a third generation native of Daytona Beach, with a large family residing in and around Volusia County.  Her father, Harvey Wiggins, is a retired sergeant from the Ormond Beach Police Department. Her mother, Shirley Wiggins, is a self-employed seamstress who specializes in wedding gowns and formals.  Her sister, Christine Wiggins, is an insurance adjuster for the County of Volusia. Her brother, David Wiggins, is a deputy sheriff serving Volusia County.

Sebrina balances the demands of her legal career by placing a premium on the time she spends with her husband, Don Slack.  After meeting at the State Attorneys’ Office, Sebrina and Don were married in 2009.  Don is a twice retired law enforcement officer from the Daytona Beach Police Department and the Office of the State Attorney – Investigations Division.  Don and Sebrina are avid outdoors people who enjoy hunting, fishing, and gardening together.  They have two dogs who are their “kids”: a Jack Russell Terrier named Cheyenne, and a Boston Terrier named, Shenanigans.

I am seeking election as a circuit court judge so that I can directly serve my community.  The community I grew up in and love.  I believe the role of a judge is to faithfully and impartially uphold the law, while providing the people who appear before the court access to equal justice. I have the experience, integrity, and dedication to serve the people of the 7th Judicial Circuit. --   Sebrina L. Slack.
